Star Trek: Pike and Spock Spinoff Series Still a Possibility

With Star Trek: Picard just a week out from its debut, CBS All Access' head of original content, Julie McNamara, has been chatting about the future of the Trek universe on the streaming platform.

Star Trek: Discovery is well on its way to a third season later this year; an animated comedy series called Star Trek: Lower Decks is in development, and a Michelle Yeoh spinoff series focusing on Captain Phillipa Georgiou and the much more covert Section 31 team is also certainly on the cards, but what else might Alex Kurtzman and co. have up their sleeves? Well, they apparently have at least two live-action Star Trek series in the very early stages of development, and one of them might just be a Spock and Pike spinoff series.

The latest versions of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and Spock (Ethan Peck) made quite the impact on Discovery's second season, and fans were soon eager for the duo to return for more of their own adventures, albeit ones that would again be set in the past.

McNamara was on hand at the Television Critics Association Q&A this week, where she fielded queries about a potential spinoff series for Pike and Spock.

“We’ve definitely heard fans that people are excited about the notion of that," she said. "We have heard them loud and clear. We also thought there was incredible chemistry around that bridge crew so among many things that we talk about, that idea is certainly one of them.”

Kurtzman and the Discovery cast have been very quiet about what we can expect from season 3 of the flagship show in the meantime.

"Obviously we made a pretty radical jump into the future at the end of season two – we're going almost 1000 years into the future in season three, which is crazy. Further than any Trek series has ever gone before," he said at San Diego Comic-Con in July. "Part of the fun of it is that we get to honour canon but shake it up hugely."

As for the crew members left behind in the past, we shall have to wait and see.
