"Star Trek: Discovery" Season 3: In the Future, The Federation's the Face of "La Résistance"? [KEY ART]
It's a great time to be a Star Trek fan – at least on the television/streaming side. CBS All Access' Picard has been growing eyeballs week after week, while Short Treks has proven itself to be both a worthy anthology in its own right as well as quality "source material" and "story sidekick" to main series Discovery and Picard. Then there's the upcoming animated Lower Decks, which might prove the "dark horse" surprise in CAA's Star Trek universe – at least until Michelle Yeoh-starring Section 31 hits the streamer.
So of course the fine folks at Bleeding Cool are constantly looking for anything and everything that offers fans clues to what they can expect when Star Trek Discovery returns for a third season – and now we have Team Secret Squirrel to thank for their fine work in scorched-earthing the internet with a series of spells and incantations for what appears to be three pieces of key art (below). We're not seeing these on any official CAA or Star Trek sites at this writing, so take these with a tiny grain of salt – though damn they look legit.
The key art looks like they would be used as social media banners, and give off the impression that (would this be irony?) Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green) and a number of other familiar faces find themselves in the position of having to be the "founding fathers and mothers" for the Federation – but from the looks of the flag and their collective steely resolve, it also looks like the Federation might start out being the voice of the resistance.
Also, our own Erin Wilhelm wants to know if that's our first look at non-binary character, ADIRA… hmmm…
Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Commander Michael Burnham, Doug Jones as Commander Saru, Anthony Rapp as Lt. Commander Paul Stamets, Mary Wiseman as Ensign Sylvia Tilly, Wilson Cruz as Dr. Hugh Culber, David Ajala as Cleveland "Book" Booker, and Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou.
Alex Kurtzman, Michelle Paradise, Heather Kadin, James Duff, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth executive produce. CBS Television Studios produces, in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.
CBS All Access' "Star Trek" Universe: Our Thoughts
Say what you want to about CBS All Access, but they did promise they would be doing some "interesting" things with the Star Trek franchise. I'd say catapaulting the Discovery 900 years into a future previously unchartered in Trek lore fits that description. Short-form anthology series Short Treks (especially its recent animated outings) could also be added to that list, as would upcoming animated workplace comedy Lower Decks. In fact, the "safest" upcoming Trek project is Picard – and they're not even putting him back in the command chair (…yet?).
But with the streaming service now under ViacomCBS, will the creative experimenting be able to continue as the need to keep and grow eyeballs becomes more fierce – especially with new streaming services on the horizon? As popular as Discovery has proven to be, will forging new Starfleet history prove to be too much for diehards to bear – or the key to revitalizing a franchise looking to reboot its cinematic side? ViacomCBS sees Star Trek (along with Mission: Impossible) as a franchise they want playing a much bigger part in the streamer's future – so eyeballs within the company will be watching, too.
