Simon Pegg Unsure About ‘Star Trek 4’ Because They “Don’t Make Marvel Money”

In a recent interview, Simon Pegg admitted that he is unsure that a fourth Star Trek sequel will happen because they aren’t as profitable as Marvel movies.

After Star Trek Beyond, the future of the franchise on the big screen appears to be up in the air. There were plans for a fourth film that would’ve reunited Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth together as father and son, but talks fell apart. Quentin Tarantino was also developing a Star Trek film himself, but it seems like that project isn’t moving forward either. Now, Legion and Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley has been taped to develop a Star Trek film. While initial reports suggested that Chris Pine would return, it sounds like Noah Hawley could also take the franchise in a new direction.

Simon Pegg played Montgomery “Scotty” Scott in the most recent Star Trek films and even co-wrote Beyond. While talking with Games Radar, Simon Pegg didn’t seem confident that he will return to the franchise due to the films’ lackluster box office receipts:

On a $181 million budget, Star Trek Beyond only made $343 million worldwide. The first film from J.J. Abrams made $385 million while Into Darkness earned $467 million. Marvel films are known for making a billion dollars worldwide with similar budgets, so Simon Pegg being uncertain about a return to the franchise is certainly justified.
