Star Trek: Picard season 1 finale sets up queer romance for iconic character
***Warning: Star Trek: Picard finale spoilers ahead***
Star Trek: Picard ended season 1 with some major game-changing moments for the long-running franchise – including the revelation that one major character is queer.
Borg Seven Of Nine (played by Jeri Ryan) appeared to signal the start of a romantic connection with Raffi (Michelle Hurd) as Picard’s new team of the La Sirena engaged into space at the end of the spin-off.
In a world where the moniker IDIC (Infinite Diversity, Infinite Combinations) has been picked up on by their dedicated fanbase, the series is taking a bold new move to be more queer-inclusive going forward.
As the fight for justice for synthetics across the 10-episodes comes to a close, Seven was seen gently holding Raffi’s hands across a table, seemingly signifying they were to become a romantic item.
The team had previously acknowledged that season 2 would see a major character explore their sexuality, but it was presumed to be Romulin warrior Elnor (Evan Evagora).
While that’s not strictly off the table either, it appears that show runner Michael Chabon was using Elnor as a red herring to hide Seven and Raffi’s budding closeness, which we have seen across the show’s run.
Speaking on his Instagram stories during a fan Q+A, Michael declared: ‘You’re right, there has been a relative lack of emphasis there,’ but added that he wanted the storyline to be organic when it emerges, with an arc planned for season 2.
He then said: ‘Their sexualities, or rather our understanding of them, emerged and evolved over the course of the season, as our actors moved into and began to inhabit their roles.’
Star Trek: Picard is available now on Amazon Prime Video.
