Star Trek: Next Generation’s Wil Wheaton reunites with cast for coronavirus lockdown chat

The Star Trek Next Generation cast have reunited for a catchup amid the coronavirus lockdown.

But don’t worry, they all adhered to the social distancing rules, and video called each other from the comfort of their own living rooms.

A picture of the cast emerged on Twitter seeing the likes of Sir Patrick Stewart, LeVar Burton, Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden and Wil Wheaton all beaming down the lens.

Marina Sirtis, who plays Counselor Deanna Troi, posted the picture alongside the caption: ‘I have the best friends in the world. Considering everything, this was the best birthday present.’

Graphic designer for the franchise, Michael Okuda, was quick to comment, adding: ‘Such a great group. I miss all of you!’ While the official Star Trek account wrote: ‘Love love love this.’

McFadden thought she’d share her own version of the snap, and gave us all the FOMO by adding: ‘Different shot, but same amazing group. What a blast it was to chat away….and laugh. felt so good.’

Sir Patrick has made a grand return to the show in the latest spin-off Picard, seeing him bring his character Jean-Luc Picard back to life.

However, despite his role becoming iconic over the years, it turns out that at one time he was not only refused the part, but was outright hated for it.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Sir Patrick told us: ‘When Gene Roddenberry met with me, he was singularly unimpressed.

‘All I really remember about that meeting was, we met at this home up in the hills, and there was orange shagpile all over the floor, nothing but this orange shagpile. And that’s all I remember.

‘I was out of that house in about seven minutes. Later on, Robert Justman [consulting producer], who was the man who had seen me at UCLA, and Rick Berman [executive producer] went campaigning on my behalf.’

He beamed: ‘I’m told a memo was circulated around all the offices from Gene Roddenberry saying “I do not want to hear Patrick Stewart’s name again!”,’ the star boomed.

‘But it all turned out OK.’

Thank the Enterprise that it did too, as Jean-Luc Picard is now one of those roles that couldn’t be played by anyone else, and despite being the dapper age of 79, Sir Patrick is back in the action for Picard.

Star Trek: Picard is available to stream now on Amazon Prime while The Next Generation is over on Netflix.
