Star Trek: Picard: Commodore Oh's Real Romulan Name Revealed

The true, Romulan name of Star Trek: Picard's villain Commodore Oh (Tamlyn Tomita) has been revealed: She is also known as General N'Dar. Oh was the clandestine cause of many horrors inflicted upon the galaxy in the CBS All-Access series starring Patrick Stewart in his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard. But little by little, Star Trek: Picard dropped the shroud of mystery surrounding Oh and the actress who portrays her exclusively told Screen Rant her real Romulan name.

Intriguingly, Oh is a rare Starfleet character who held two very high ranks in opposite, enemy organizations. Introduced in the second episode of Star Trek: Picard season 1, Commodore Oh was the intimidating Head of Starfleet Security. Purportedly a Vulcan, it was later revealed that Oh is actually a half-Vulcan and half-Romulan hybrid. Further, Oh was a double agent and, in her true identity, she is the leader of the Zhat Vash, which is a secret, synthetics-hating cabal within the Romulan Tal Shiar. With Narissa (Peyton List), who poses as Starfleet's Lieutenant Rizzo, as her agent, Commodore Oh masterminded the tragic Mars attack in 2385 that led to synthetics being banned by the United Federation of Planets. Oh also coerced Dr. Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill) to join Picard's mission as a Romulan spy so she could kill Dr. Bruce Maddox (John Ales), who created a new race of synthetics, including Soji (Isa Briones), the daughter of the late Commander Data (Brent Spiner). Once Soji's homeworld of Coppelius was located, Oh personally led a massive Romulan fleet to wipe out the androids, who were saved by the heroic sacrifice of Picard and a Starfleet armada led by Acting Captain Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes).

In an interview with Screen Rant, Tamlyn Tomita dropped the bombshell that Commodore Oh's real name is General N'Dar, and Oh is her false, Starfleet identity. This syncs with the fact that Riker referred to Oh as "General" during their confrontation in Star Trek: Picard's season 1 finale, "Et in Arcadia Ego, Part II" - although the Starfleet Captain never uttered Oh's Romulan name so it isn't clear if Riker actually knows it or not. However, Tomita told us the name General N'Dar was part of the conception of the character of Commodore Oh. Tomita states, "I think there were a lot of creative, wonderful juices flowing back and forth between the creators as to who Commodore Oh was, and General N'Dar... But yeah, I am a General, my name is N'Dar, but that's scripted" (and the name N'Dar didn't air in the episode).

Star Trek: Picard added many new wrinkles to Romulan lore by introducing the Zhat Vash and their opposite number, the cadre of Romulan warrior nuns known as the Qowat Milat. In addition, Romulan names now carry an even greater significance thanks to Star Trek: Picard since the Tal Shiar secret agent Narek (Harry Treadaway) and Soji discussed how Romulans have one name for outsiders and another secret name reserved for family and loved ones. Narek confessing his real name - Hrai Yan - to Soji was the Romulan spy's way of declaring he actually loved her, although this didn't stop Narek from trying to kill Soji on Commodore Oh's orders.

With Narek's name game in mind, the fact that Commodore Oh also has a true Romulan name isn't surprising. However, since details not directly stated in Star Trek episodes or films often aren't considered canonical, there's a chance Commodore Oh's real name could be changed if she reappears in Star Trek: Picardseason 2. Still, it's more likely Oh's real name is N'Dar and this will be officially stated if she does return to menace the Alpha Quadrant again next season.
