Star Trek: Picard: 10 Questions From The Next Generation That The New Series Has Yet To Answer

As a continuation of Star Trek: The Next Generation, one of the most popular Star Trek series of all time, Star Trek: Picard explored many of the themes and events it introduced. Picking up twenty years after the last film to feature the TNG cast, the latest entry in the Star Trek franchise focused on former Starfleet Admiral Jean-Luc Picard  finding his purpose after retirement.

The new series was never meant to replicate the success of TNG, but lovingly acknowledge it as it blazed a bold new course, peppering every episode with references and guest-stars. While fans have been elated to see familiar elements of TNG included in Picard, there are still unanswered questions the new Star Trek series has yet to answer about the beloved show.

10 WHAT WAS THE IMPACT OF DATA'S TRIAL?

In the iconic TNG episode "Measure of a Man," Data is put on trial for refusing to be disassembled for research purposes by Dr. Bruce Maddox. Starfleet has deemed him their property, while he views himself as an individual with rights, autonomy, and agency.

Picard defended Data at the trial, and it was established that Data was his own person with his own civil liberties. How did that translate over to the synthetics fans see in Star Trek: Picard? The Federation is able to issue a ban on them immediately after the Mars revolt, but isn't that the same as murdering a race of beings?

9 WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BORG?

The Borg were introduced in the second season of TNG as a formidable antagonist, and rose to prominence in the Season 3 two-part season finale when Captain Picard was assimilated.

In Star Trek: Picard, fans see an abandoned Borg Cube called the Artifact, which has been severed from the Collective (along with all of its ex-Borg clones). But what happened to the rest of the Borg? Are they still a threat to the Federation? Do they care about losing one Borg Cube or do they have enough to spare?

8 WHAT HAPPENED TO WESLEY CRUSHER AND THE TRAVELER?

Wesley Crusher, the boy-genius who was given a bridge position on the Enterprise despite not having even finished Starfleet, left the series in Season 3. He followed a mysterious extraterrestrial entity called the Traveler to explore uncharted reaches of space.

He wasn't seen again until his brief cameo in Star Trek: Nemesis attending Riker and Troi's wedding ceremony, in full Starfleet dress uniform. What happened to him during those pivotal years? Did he rise higher in the Starfleet ranks? Star Trek: Picard has yet to feature an adult Wesley.

7 WHAT HAPPENED TO THE NEUTRAL ZONE OUTPOSTS?

In "The Neutral Zone" episode of TNG, the Enterprise is called to investigate the destruction of outposts along the Neutral Zone between Federation Space and Romulan Territory. The Romulans believe the Enterprise is responsible, while the Enterprise believes the Romulans did it as an act of self-sabotage.

Later, Data points out that the destruction from the Borg is equal to the destruction noted along the Neutral Zone, indicating the Borg were behind the attack. Has that been the case with Star Trek: Picard, where Seven of Nine states the Neutral Zone no longer exists? Or was it simply eroded from decades of territorial dispute?

6 DID JONO EVER MEET HIS GRANDMOTHER?

On the episode "Suddenly Human," a human boy named Jono is taken aboard the Enterprise who believes himself to be Talarian, and the only human in the Talarian Militia. An orphan originally from a family of two Starfleet officers, the teenager refuses to be reconnected with any part of his human life.

Picard slowly teaches Jono about his family, all deceased except for one living grandmother. Though he appreciates Picard's efforts, he never meets his grandmother, and instead chooses to return to his adoptive Talarian family.  Perhaps Star Trek: Picard will feature an adult Jono in future seasons?

5 WHAT HAPPENED AFTER ADMIRAL SATIE'S INVESTIGATION?

In the gripping episode "Drumhead," a Klingon officer in the Starfleet Exchange Program is accused of being a spy simply because he is Klingon by Admiral Satie, a fanatic xenophobe who carries old grudges against Federation enemies.

She also accuses crewman Simon Tarses of espionage, who lied about his Romulan heritage so he could be accepted into Starfleet. Satie is revealed to be mentally unstable, and Tarses is cleared, but what were the ramifications of the investigation? Did Starfleet become lax on enrollment, allowing for Commodore Oh to infiltrate Starfleet in Star Trek: Picard?

4 DO THE ROMULANS HAVE DNA FOR SEVERAL STARFLEET OFFICERS?

In the TNG film Star Trek: Nemesis, it's revealed that the Romulans procured some of Captain Picard's DNA and used it to grow a clone named Shinzon. The plan was to rapidly age him and replace Picard in Starfleet with an operative under Romulan control.

Things didn't go exactly as Shinzon planned, but a conversation between him and Picard left open the possibility that there were other DNA samples of prominent Starfleet officers that the Romulans gathered. Perhaps dozens of clones were dumped in the mines on Remus? Perhaps others will show up in Star Trek: Picard?

3  WHAT HAPPENED TO Q?

The barbarous banter between Captain Picard and Q, the immortal trickster who so famously put humanity on trial for crimes against itself, contributed to some of the best episodes of the series. Despite the animosity between them, they shared a begrudging mutual respect.

In the series finale "All Good Things," Q showed several different possible futures for Picard and his crew, and congratulated him on being a credit to his species. He then tells Picard cryptically, "See you...out there" and disappeared. What happened to Q - are fans to believe for two decades Q never reappeared to Picard?

2 WHAT'S PICARD'S RELATIONSHIP WITH GUINAN?

The sagacious El-Aurian bartender aboard the Enterprise shared a special relationship with Picard that was "beyond friendship and beyond family," often being the only person that Picard felt comfortable enough around to let his guard down.

Neither TNG or the films ever fully articulated their unique dynamic, and with Whoopi Goldberg said to be reprising her role in Star Trek: Picard Season 2, will fans finally get to know more about it?

1 WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN PICARD AND BEVERLY CRUSHER?

In "All Good Things," which offered several possible outcomes for the future of the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Picard learned what happened to him and Beverly Crusher. There had always been an unspoken romantic bond between them, but in the series finale they had gotten married and then divorced.

Did this happen to Picard and Star Trek: Picard simply hasn't referenced it yet? Will fans get to see what happened to Dr. Crusher? Perhaps she'll be married to someone else after having waited for Picard for so long, or perhaps they'll finally get their happily ever after.
