Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Should Take Us to the Mirror Universe

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of Star Trek: Picard, now streaming on CBS All Access.

What seemed like the impossible happened when Sir Patrick Stewart announced he was returning to the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard for the CBS All Access series Star Trek: Picard. The actor once again beamed aboard a starship in Season 1 of the series, and he went on a perilous adventure that involved Romulans, a reclaimed Borg Cube, a conspiracy to eliminate all synthetic life and the revelation that the fan-favorite android Data had a daughter, Soji. Throughout the ten-episode outing, Picard didn't have time to slow down, as he hopped from one corner of the universe to the other in order to protect Soji.

Now, the first season of Picard has concluded, but fans already know that a second one is on the way. There are many directions Jean-Luc's next adventure could go, but if there is one thing we wish, it's that Season 2 takes us to a place never visited in Star Trek: The Next Generation: the Mirror Universe.

The Mirror Universe first appeared in the classic Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "Mirror, Mirror." Essentially, the Mirror Universe is a parallel reality where characters encounter dark, twisted and villainous reflections of themselves. Whereas the prime universe is a place where the United Federation of Planets prospers throughout the cosmos, the Terran Empire rules the Mirror Universe with a cruel iron fist.

The parallel reality has become a staple of the series. In fact, Star Trek series Deep Space Nine, Enterprise and Discovery have all taken us to the Mirror Universe. However, the crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation has never gone there, despite the series running for seven seasons. While nearly every other Star Trek series has visited the Mirror Universe, one of the most beloved and celebrated never got around to it. Sure, several novels and comic book stories have taken the crew of the NCC-1701-D to the parallel reality, but it never happened in live-action.

For a time, it seemed like it would never happen. But now, Star Trek: Picard has just brought with it a renewed opportunity. With Jean-Luc Picard once again roaming the stars once again with a new crew and a new ship, now would be the perfect time to deliver something The Next Generation never did by taking the famous Federation captain to the Mirror Universe. Surely, every TNG fan would love to see what Picard's twisted doppelganger would be like, and how the real Jean-Luc would react to his evil self.

What's more, this could even be used to stage a full TNG reunion. While some characters are either away or dead in the main universe, a visit to the Mirror Universe could show us that Picard's crew is still intact and active in this other reality. Not only could fans then see the return of the U.S.S. Enterprise D make a comeback (more than likely with a twist), but they could also finally see the ship's entire crew reunited. Even if these would be dark reflections of the characters we know and love, it would surely make for a fascinating return that no Star Trek fan would want to miss.

Star Trek: Picard stars Patrick Stewart, Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Harry Treadaway. The first season is available on CBS All Access.
