Star Trek: Picard - Jonathan Frakes Has High Praise for Riker's Fate

Star Trek: Picard has afforded fans the opportunity to catch up not only with Picard himself but other beloved members of the Starship Enterprise, including Jonathan Frakes' William Riker. In fact, the fate of Riker is one the actor clearly enjoyed discovering when first presented with the script for the episode "Nepenthe."

"Given that, I was really glad that Troi and Riker were living in the mountains in a big house," Frakes told ComicBook.com. "It felt wonderful and different and somehow logical that they would have done what they could. I love that they had kids, and one has died and that they had gone somewhere to try to save his life. All that I thought was spectacular. And frankly, watching Marina's work with Lulu, who played our daughter, who was also spectacular, which didn't hurt. The whole experience was great, and as you saw in the social, I'm sure, Dorn came to visit, and LeVar came to visit. It has been, without getting too corny or Pollyanna, it's really been great to be back in the Star Trek fold. It was great to be back on Star Trek: Discovery. I feel very privileged to have been part of that family, but this is really our family, the Picard show."

Riker left the Enterprise to command the USS Titan but would retire from active Starfleet duties to look after his sickly son Thad. Along with his family, Riker moved to the planet Nepenthe, which is known for its healing and medicinal properties, but despite their best efforts, they were unable to save Thad, ultimately choosing to remain on Nepenthe after he passed.

Frakes also praised Michael Chabon's work on Picard, pointing to the "thoughtfulness and the depth of character and the sense of irony" that Chabon's writing has brought to Picard. "I mean, he's a fanboy to start, but he's a genius in the mix. So, his hand on the tiller, if you will, has really been exciting."

Star Trek: Picard stars Patrick Stewart, Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Harry Treadaway. The first season is available on CBS All Access.
