“Discovery” S3 To Be Lighter, Funner ‘Trek’

The second season of CBS All Access’ “Star Trek: Discovery” closed out with the crew jumping 930 years into their future, taking us well beyond the mid-2200s of the first two seasons and well past the late 2300s of the Next Generation/Picard era to the complete unknown that is 3187.

That is well beyond basically anything in previous Trek lore from Enterprise’s Temporal Cold War to the various timeships in Voyager. It’s also far enough out to allow for a complete reshaping of the galactic map with many civilisations rising and falling through that time.

Jonathan Frakes, the Trek veteran who is directing multiple episodes of the new season, says that the third season will boast a ‘big tonal shift’ and will apparently be lighter and more action oriented – moving away from its darker themes. He tells Comicbook.com:

Said partner in crime is Cleveland ‘Book’ Booker, a classic space rogue type played by David Ajala who has joined the cast. The series was able to shoot its entire season from July 2019 through to the end of February 2020, wrapping just weeks before the coronavirus pandemic shut most productions down.

Post-production on the third season is continuing remotely and editor Scott Gamzon recently tweeted that sound, VFX and editorial are all hard at work from their homes on the new episodes. However it’s going to take a little longer due to the new arrangement.
