PS5 Reveal Event Is the Reason Xbox 20/20 Skipped June, Say Analysts
Having never promised an Xbox Series X showcase between its May and July Xbox 20/20 showcases, Xbox is skipping the month of June, and the experts think that it's due to the PlayStation 5's recent announcement. Sony's next-generation console was finally unveiled after months of speculation alongside an impressive slate of console exclusives like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart last Thursday.
The internet has predictably gone wild after seeing the PS5 for itself, with the aforementioned PlayStation showcase event drawing millions of live viewers across several social media platforms. Further details on the system have come forward since then, revealing that the console will come with the kid-friendly platformer Astro's Playroom pre-installed and that it could coast up to $700 at launch, although this latter point isn't concrete. Even the more playful side of the gaming community has weighed in on the PS5’s futuristic design, comparing it to wireless routers and even the USS Enterprise of Star Trek fame. Overall, it seems that all eyes are on Sony this month, and even their longtime competitor Microsoft has taken notice, if they weren't already aware of its competitor's reveal window ahead of time.

Start nowAccording to WCCFTech, analysts at DFC Intelligence have studied data surrounding the PlayStation 5’s monumental unveiling on Thursday, and have concluded that interest in that event has outweighed anything Microsoft has done for the Xbox Series X to date. “One measure of how excited an audience is about a new system is how many non-industry consumers contact us about product reveal events,” the DFC’s reports read. “Starting on May 7th, Microsoft will be hosting monthly reveal events. However, the interest we have seen in the Xbox events paled compared with the June 11th Sony event (which may be a reason Microsoft is skipping a June event).”
In contrast to Sony’s slow burn of new information regarding the PS5, Microsoft hit the ground running with the Xbox Series X, revealing the new console’s PC-like design and familiar controller at The Game Awards back in December. Since then, the company has shifted its focus towards showcasing the exciting line-up of games that will be available on the Series X via the recent Xbox 20/20 presentation last month - although Microsoft would later acknowledge their viewers’ disappointment in the lack of actual gameplay footage at the event.
With the current tidal wave of buzz regarding the newly-unveiled PlayStation 5, it makes sense for Microsoft to want to hang back until the excitement surrounding their direct competition cools off a bit. Both they and Sony have taken different approaches to revealing their next-generation consoles, and now that the new systems are out for the world to see the question turns to which one will win over the hearts of gamers. It’s anyone’s ball game now, and fans will only begin to get the answer when both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X hit stores this holiday season.
