James McAvoy Would Love to Play Captain Picard
When one thinks of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, only one actor comes to mind – Patrick Stewart.
After all, the 80-year-old English actor has portrayed the character since his very inception in 1987 in Star Trek: The Next Generation. It’s a role Stewart has made iconic, much like his turn as Professor Xavier in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men movie franchise.
But there’s one other actor who’d happily take the role off him and that’s Scottish superstar James McAvoy (who, funnily enough, portrays the younger Professor X in the aforementioned franchise).
In an interview on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show, McAvoy talked about his Star Trek parody he filmed during isolation where he portrayed a Captain reminiscent of Kirk and Picard. If you want a taster of its comical absurdity, you can check it out right here:
But when asked about whether he would take over Stewart’s role as Picard, McAvoy humorously responded:
“Jimmy, [Star Force: Scifisolation] is the only world that exists in which I will play Jean-Luc Picard. If they don’t hire me, I’m gonna make it on my phone… I’m calling it right now, I’m doing the virtual lockdown equivalent of rubbing my scent all over Patrick’s face and saying this territory is mine. All the other bald actors can f*** off, it’s me.“
Well, if anything, it’s safe to say that James McAvoy is a passionate Trekkie of sorts. But, as fans know, he’ll have to wait his turn before playing Picard – Patrick Stewart is already portraying the character in his eponymous series. Then again, this is the wonderful world of science fiction. Could McAvoy portray a younger version of the character via flashback or time travel plot? Who knows.
Meanwhile, Picard is expected to air its second season on CBS All Access in late 2020/2021. Be sure to return for more updates on this as new information becomes available.
