Star Trek: Lower Decks Books Paul Scheer for Guest Role

With the new animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks premiering on CBS All Access next month, the comedy series has added a fan-favorite comedian in a guest role: Paul Scheer.

Scheer will portray Lieutenant Commander Andy Billups, the direct supervisor of series' lead Ensign Rutherford on board Starfleet's U.S.S. Cerritos. Scheer will appear in a recurring capacity throughout the 10-episode first season.

Rutherford, portrayed by Eugene Cordero, is assigned to the starship's engineering unit while still acclimating to a recent cybernetic implant. He is joined by the rest of the series' main cast, responsible for completing the tedious, menial tasks on board the Cerritos, one of the least important vessels in Starfleet's vast, spacefaring armada.

With prolific Rick and Morty writer Mike McMahan serving as showrunner, Lower Decks is the latest in the new wave of original Star Trek programming to appear on CBS All Access since the premium streaming service's launch. Producer Alex Kurtzman, who oversees the new Star Trek programming on the digital platform, noted that the upcoming comedy good-naturedly pokes fun at franchise tropes while staying respectful of its overarching legacy in an all-age friendly animated series.

Star Trek: Lower Decks stars Tawny Newsome as Ensign Beckett Mariner, Eugene Codero as Ensign Rutherford, Jack Quaid as Ensign Brad Boimler, Noël Wells as Ensign Tendi, Dawnn Lewis as Captain Carol Freeman, Jerry O'Connell as Commander Jack Ransom, Gillian Vigman as Doctor T'Ana and Fred Tatasciore as Lieutenant Shaxs. The show will premiere on CBS All Access on Aug. 6.
