Star Trek: Lower Decks Animated Series Debuts Scene from First Episode
The latest addition to the Star Trek franchise is the animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks, which premieres on CBS All Access next month. As part of Comic-Con@Home, the voice cast assembled with series creator Mike McMahan to present a new clip from the upcoming show.
Set shortly after the events of 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis, the show follows the Starfleet starship U.S.S. Cerritos, a vessel assigned with carrying out all the bureaucratic duties for "Second Contact" with new civilizations around the galaxy. Recording a faux Captain's Log from a supply closet while on leave, main character Ensign Brad Boimler is abruptly interrupted by crewmate Ensign Beckett Mariner.
With Beckett visibly intoxicated on Romulan whiskey, she teases Brad for privately pretending to be a commanding officer when he is actually assigned to menial tasks on the Cerritos. Then, discovering a Klingon Bat'leth, Beckett begins drunkenly swinging it around before accidentally wounding her friend, prompting them both to panic over the bloody mishap.
Developed by McMahan, who serves as showrunner and executive producer, the series features a bit darker, comedic twist while maintaining respect for the overall franchise, as it boldly goes where no one has gone before on CBS All Access.
Star Trek: Lower Decks stars Tawny Newsome as Ensign Beckett Mariner, Eugene Codero as Ensign Rutherford, Jack Quaid as Ensign Brad Boimler, Noël Wells as Ensign Tendi, Dawnn Lewis as Captain Carol Freeman, Jerry O'Connell as Commander Jack Ransom, Gillian Vigman as Doctor T'Ana and Fred Tatasciore as Lieutenant Shaxs. The show will premiere on CBS All Access on Aug. 6.
