Star Trek: Discovery season 3 premiere date announced in new teaser

Star Trek: Discovery has revealed its season 3 US premiere date in a brand new teaser.

The 13-episode season will launch on CBS: All Access on October 15, with new episodes premiering every subsequent Thursday.

A release date has yet to be confirmed for Netflix, where the show streams in the UK and internationally, but previous seasons saw episodes go up on the service a day after the US.

This means we can probably expect season 3 to kick off on Netflix on October 16, with a new episode arriving every Friday.

In the new teaser, which you can watch above, we're given a quick glimpse at Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) planting a Federation flag on a currently unknown planet.

In terms of what we can expect from the show's third season, Jonathan Frakes, who played Will Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation and has directed episodes of Discovery, previously teased that the upcoming episodes will have a more light-hearted tone.

"Discovery has primarily to do with Sonequa's character, as you'll see," Frakes Comicbook.com. "At the end of season two, we flash-forwarded I think 930 years. Michael Burnham has found a new core, not to mention a new partner in crime."

"So again, there's a big tonal shift on that show, less driven by the pain and guilt of her past and more about the magical reunification of the Discovery crew and wherever she went off to," he continued.

"God knows where she went as the Red Angel. So those two things coming back together is very much the theme, and how grateful everyone is and what's next. It's got a lot of action-adventure and not so much pain."

Star Trek: Discovery returns for season 3 in 2020. It airs on CBS All Access in the US and Netflix internationally, including the UK.
