Hawley’s “Star Trek” Film Now On Hold
Paramount Pictures’s new motion picture group president Emma Watts is reportedly re-assessing her film slate – and that includes the three “Star Trek” film projects in development.
Three potential ‘Trek’ films were in the works – one with a story by Quentin Tarantino, one that would continue the Abrams-universe films and see Chris Pine reunite with his ‘father’ (Chris Hemsworth), and a third by “Fargo” TV creator Noah Hawley.
The first two seemingly stalled out a while back. Tarantino effectively walked away from his project, though the script by “The Revenant” scribe Mark L. Smith is still there. The Abrams-verse film stalled due to salary negotiation issues with Pine and Hemsworth.
Hawley’s was the only one that has seen any movement recently, but today THR reports that Hawley’s project has been put on the back burner by Watts who is now trying to determine how to proceed with the franchise and if any of these three should be prioritised.
One issue is that Hawley’s script apparently deals with a virus that wipes out vast parts of the known universe, a potential risk for a big budget feature in these times.
The mess over the ‘Trek’ films comes as the TV world of the franchise is performing well with a third season of “Star Trek: Discovery” later this year, a second season of “Star Trek: Picard” being planned, the animated comedy “Star Trek: Lower Decks” having just premiered, and the new series “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” currently in the works.
