How News Anchor Terry Left American Dad!

How did fan-favorite Terry Bates leave American Dad!, and why did the character abruptly exit the series? While Family Guy is now a mainstay that has run for eighteen seasons and counting, it struggled during its early years. It was cancelled after three seasons but in the years that followed it attracted a major cult following due to DVD sales and repeat viewings, so it was revived in 2005 and has been running ever since. Its success also saw creator Seth MacFarlane become a major name in comedy.

In the years since Family Guy's revival, he's created spinoff The Cleveland Show and the Tedmovie duology, where MacFarlane plays a sentient, foul-mouthed teddy bear who is best friends with Mark Wahlberg's character John. His most recent series is The Orville, which is a loving parody of the Star Trek franchise that has received solid reviews for its cast and comic writing and has run for two seasons thus far.

Seth MacFarlane also co-created American Dad! with Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman. The series focuses on the family of CIA agent Stan Smith, which includes his wife Francine, their children Steve and Hayley and their wisecracking alien pal Roger; Patrick Stewart also has a recurring role as Stan's boss Avery Bullock. While the show, especially in its early years, looked superficially similiar to Family Guy, it soon forged its own unique identity and is often considered the superior show. It also surrounded the Smith's with a neverending supply of great characters, including their neighbors Terry and Greg.

Greg (Seth MacFarlane) and Terry (Mike Barker) are a gay couple and co-anchors on the local news show. Stan initially wasn't aware they were in a romantic relationship and learned to overcome his own prejudices, while Francine later acted as a surrogate for their child Libby. The pair were fan-favorites but following Mike Barker's exit from the series in the tenth season, Terry was ultimately written out. His absence was later explained in American Dad! season 11 as Terry leaving Greg to follow rock band 311 on tour.

Terry's presence on American Dad! is missed by fans but there don't appear to be any plans for the character to reappear. The series' popularity shows no sign of wavering, as seasons 18 and 19 have already been greenlit. There was also talk of a possible American Dad! movie but like the long-gestating Family Guy film, there's been no signs of movement on it for some time.
