Quentin Tarantino Won’t Direct His 20s Gangster-Set Star Trek Film, But It Could Still Happen!

A couple of years ago, the odd bit of news was reported. Quentin Tarantino not only had an idea for a Star Trek film, but the project itself gained a lot of momentum very quickly. Tarantino met with the Bad Robot folks to discuss the project, and they hired The Revenant screenwriter to help execute this story. It’s been a long time, but the circumstances surrounding that project have gone silent.

But last week, Deadline gave a bit of an update on the project. The first has to do with its director. We knew from the get-go that Tarantino was a potential director for the project, but given that he only has one more film under his belt to go, it was a high-risk deal. Do we really want this Star Trek movie to be the last one Tarantino creates? Well, fret no longer. The outlet states that Tarantino has dropped out as director of the project.

This doesn’t mean his Star Trek movie won’t happen though. Tarantino lent his hand to the story, but that doesn’t mean he has to be the one to realize it to the big screen. He’s said from day one that there can be another director to push it forward. So, it’s a no from Tarantino, but that wasn’t the only big piece of news we got regarding his film.

The outlet also reported that this Star Trek movie takes place on Earth in a 20s gangster setting. Fans of the original series may recognize a similar setting with the episode “A Piece of the Action.” That episode takes place in 1920s Chicago. It’s worth noting that the original report states the episode took place in the 30s, but my research indicates the 20s. Honestly, it doesn’t matter too much, but I figured I’d explain the disparity between their report and mine on that front.

Regardless, it’s an interesting premise that is very fitting for Tarantino. It falls right in with his love of gangster stories. But is this actually a possibility? Well, the report goes on to say that Paramount will be making these Star Trek decisions in the weeks to come.
