Rick and Morty: 5 Star Trek Characters They Would Love (And 5 They Would Hate)

In the world of science fiction, Star Trek is often looked at as the calm, mature version of the genre. There are plenty of phaser fights, but most Star Trek stories are about good people coming together to solve problems with as little violence as possible. The crews of the Enterprise, Voyager, Cerritos, Discovery, and Deep Space Nine take their work seriously - for the most part - and believe in the teachings of Starfleet and the Federation.

And almost all of the things these heroes believe in are the exact things Rick and Morty rebel against. The animated DIY scientist and his grandson travel the galaxy and multiverse doing what they want when they want. If the foul-mouthed duo happened to find themselves in the Star Trek universe, how would they do? Here are five Star Trek characters Rick and Morty would love, and five they would hate...

10 Love: Quark

The owner of the bar on Deep Space Nine, Quark is the exact kind of Ferengi that Rick would be friends with. Quark never hides his wants or goals and is more than happy to help others procure hard to find items for the right price, and his bar is a great place to hang out. But most importantly, Quark is loyal to his friends. Rick likes to act like he doesn't care about others, but he is the kind of person that values friendships and loyalty. Add in the dabo girls and all the rootbeer that Quark keeps in stock and even Morty won't mind stopping seeing the bartender.

9 Hate: Mister Spock

At first blush, Mister Spock may seem like the exact kind of person Rick and Morty would get along with. As a Vulcan, Spock prides himself on making decisions based on logic instead of emotion, even as his mother's human blood beats through his green blood.

While Rick likes to act as if every choice he makes is based around logic, the truth is that he's even more emotional than Spock in the classic Star Trek season one episode, "The Naked Time". Rick would start off liking Spock, but soon enough the Vulcan's logic would get in his way, making them enemies. And for Morty, Spock's superior tone would rub him the wrong way.

8 Love: Beckett Mariner

One of the new Star Trek characters from Star Trek: Lower Decks, Beckett Mariner is basically as close to a Rick as someone could get in Starfleet. She's highly intelligent but isn't interested in moving up the ranks or following the rules. Also like Rick, Mariner loves when things get out of hand because as much as she doesn't want to work, she does want to be challenged. For Morty, Mariner's sense of humor and love of lazying about would be a quick way to his heart. It's easy to see Morty having a crush on Mariner if they ever met.

7 Hate: Reg Barclay

A fan favorite, Reg Barclay is basically the Jerry of Star Trek. Appearing in a number of Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes, Barclay is shown to be insecure, terrible at social interaction, and - in Star Trek terms - not very intelligent. Barclay is OK at his job, but he never really stands out, and he seems pretty much fine with that.

Rick and Morty would despise pretty much everything about Barclay. With all the technology available to him, Barclay does nothing special with it. His greatest achievement is a holodeck program that involves Deanna Troi and Doctor Crusher doing things they probably wouldn't approve of. Morty may like that holodeck program, but he and Rick wouldn't have any respect for the man who made it.

6 Love: Harry Mudd

In the world of Star Trek, there seem to be very few people who work outside of Starfleet or the Federation system. The ones that do are usually either part of a different group like the Romulan Empire or they're not exactly doing everything on the up and up. Harry Mudd is one of the former. A spacefaring con artist of the 23rd century, Mudd ran afoul of Captain Kirk a number of times but was never an actual threat to anyone.

Rick and Morty would appreciate Mudd's rebellious attitude and his ability to survive on his own. Plus, Mudd is the kind of guy who may well have something Rick wants, and as long as Mudd doesn't try and con the alcoholic scientist, they'll get along just fine.

5 Hate: Worf

Rick and Morty aren't great at dealing with uptight alien races. Their more relaxed style tends to make a lot of aliens angry to the point of trying to murder the duo. Rick especially seems to hate organizations that focus on things like honor, and when it comes to honor, no one is more concerned with it than Worf.

Raised by humans, Worf has immersed himself in Klingon traditions to an extent that even some other Klingons find annoying. Within minutes of meeting the character from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Rick and Morty would surely do something to offend Worf's honor, and the hatred would begin.

4 Love: Jadzia Dax

Another character from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Jadzia Dax would quickly become friends with Rick and Morty. The eighth host of the Dax symbiont, Jadzia loves to meet new people, and loves it even more when these people are different from the usual Federation types. She's a gambler, a drinker, and a lover of adventure, and those are three things Rick would love about her.

For Morty, Jadzia would be like the cool aunt he never had. She would be introducing him to awesome bands he'd never heard of and giving him advice on what to do to get Jessica to notice him.

3 Hate: Geordi La Forge

In reality, Rick and Morty would dislike pretty much every member of the Enterprise crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation, but Geordi would hold a special place of hatred in their hearts. Geordi is a genius engineer who spends more time complaining about not having a girlfriend than even Morty does. For seven seasons, Geordi never showed interest in any of his own hobbies instead, he chose to play Sherlock Holmes with Data in the holodeck or go over manuals. For Rick and Morty, everything about Geordi would rub them the wrong way.

2 Love: Zefram Cochrane

Like Rick, Zefram Cochrane wasn't about to sit around and wait for others to invent things. Cochrane was the first human to build a warp drive, bringing humanity to the attention of the Vulcans, and he did it all from his garage. Cochrane built his three-person ship in an abandoned missile silo using equipment he found or bought himself.

Cochrane was a do it yourself inventor, just like Rick. He was also a fan of drinking and wasn't a fan of taking advice from others, even when they came from the future to help him. These are two more things he happens to share with Rick. It's hard to imagine Rick and Zefram Cochrane not being friends.

1 Hate: Q

There are few things Rick hates more than people who think they're smarter than him. On that list would be beings who act like they're superior to others and claim to be omniscient. The being known as Q checks off all three of those boxes, which means Rick would do everything he could to destroy Captain Picard's most annoying foe. And that's the thing with Rick, even omniscient beings aren't safe from his big brain and the devices he creates. Rick has killed aliens far more powerful than him without even thinking about it, and he would happily add Q to that list.
