Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Going Back To Basics

One of my favorite parts of the Star Trek: Discovery series was the addition of the U.S.S. Enterprise and its crew. This included Spock, played by Ethan Peck, Number One, played by Rebecca Romijn, and Captain Christopher Pike, played by Anson Mount. With Discovery now in the future, it would have been a real shame not to see them again.

Lucky for us, earlier this year CBS announced that they had greenlit Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. This is a spin-off from Star Trek: Discovery that would serve as a prequel to the original 1966 series. It will explore the adventures of the U.S.S. Enterprise ten years or so before Captain Kirk took over the command.

During the Star Trek Day CBS had various presentations. One was specifically for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. While they weren’t allowed to say much about the series yet, we were able to learn a few things about what we can expect. Along with the three cast members mentioned above the panel included Executive Producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers. As well as Co-Executive Producers & Writers Akela Cooper and Davy Perez.

During the panel, they mentioned that they wanted to take the series back to its classic roots. This new series would be more episodic. It will follow the ship and its crew traveling to strange new planets. Here we will see new aliens, ships, and cultures. They are going to try and bring a modern sensibility to Star Trek storytelling.

One thing that we learned about Captain Pike during Star Trek: Discovery is that he has seen his future and his death. Mount talked about the fact that in this new series, his character is still trying to figure out how to move forward with that knowledge. As for Peck’s Spock, he will attempt to try and find a balance between logic and emotions as he grows into that iconic character we all know and love.

Cooper also talked about how the individual episodes will have separate stories. But they will also be focusing on specific character arcs that may take place over a few episodes. Specific plot points will be recurring, setting up a future episode.

Given how much I liked the characters in Star Trek: Discovery, I can’t wait to see what they will do in their own series. Especially if they are going to be taking back to the old school of storytelling. I am looking forward to seeing this develop. What do you think of what we know of this series so far?
