What To Expect From Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Lower Decks season 1 finale.

Here's everything we know about Star Trek: Lower Decksseason 2, which has already been ordered by CBS All-Access. Created by Mike McMahan, Star Trek: Lower Decks is the first animated half-hour comedy set in the Star Trek universe. The voyages of the California-class U.S.S. Cerritos take place in 2380, continuing the fan-favorite 24th-century era of Star Trek: The Next Generation. But the twist is Star Trek: Lower Decks is about the Ensigns aboard the Cerritos instead of the Captain and the starship's senior staff.

In Star Trek: Lower Decks season 1, the show's centerpiece quartet — Ensigns Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), D'Vana Tendi (Noel Wells), and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) — had memorable adventures. From Mariner saving the Cerritos several times despite being "criminally insubordinate," Boimler's ill-fated romance and his relentless pursuit of validation and promotion, to Tendi and Rutherford's infatuation with their starship, Star Trek: Lower Decks' fast-paced irreverence both honored classic Star Trek tropes while taking some bold risks to tell new types of stories.

Star Trek: Lower Decks' season 1 finale, "No Small Parts," surprisingly changed the paradigm of the series going forward into season 2. From a heroic death of one of the Cerritos' own to Boimler unexpectedly jumping off the Cerritos and taking a promotion on another starship, Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 will have to reconcile the upheavals as it continues to boldly go where no Star Trek series has gone before.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Is Renewed For Season 2

Star Trek: Lower Decks is returning for season 2 on CBS All-Access. The series was ordered for two seasons in 2018 and production on both seasons has been back-to-back, even despite the Covid-19 pandemic. While production on the live-actionStar Trek: Picard season 2, Star Trek: Discovery season 4, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have been delayed and are subject to safety restrictions, as an animated series, Star Trek: Lower Decks has the advantage of being voiced, animated, edited, and sound mixed remotely.

Although CBS All Access hasn't announced a release date yet, fans can expect Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 sometime in 2021, possibly even immediately after Star Trek: Discovery season 3 wraps up on the streaming service early next year.

The Cast Of Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2

Almost the entire cast of Star Trek: Lower Decks will return for season 2, including Tawny Newsome as Becket Mariner, Jack Quaid as Brad Boimler, Noel Wells as D'Vana Tendi, Eugene Cordero as Sam Rutherford, Jerry O'Connell as Commander Jack Ransom, and Dawnn Lewis as Captain Carol Freeman. However, there should also be at least one new crewmember aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos since the starship will need a new Security Chief to replace the deceased Lt. Shaxs (Fred Tatasciore), who sacrificed his life to save the ship in Star Trek: Lower Decks' season 1 finale.

In addition, there's no telling which new characters and familiar faces from the Star Trek franchise will pop up in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2. Q (John de Lancie), Captain Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes), and Commander Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) from Star Trek: The Next Generation made cameos late in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 1. Possibly more TNG favorites or perhaps even castmembers from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager could appear in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2.

What Will Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2's Story Be About?

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 1 successfully emulated TNG's episodic format while also weaving a macro story throughout its 10-episodes. But Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 begins with huge changes taken place aboard the Cerritos: Not only have Mariner and her mother, Captain Freeman, agreed to work together and support each other, but Brad Boimler has left the Cerritos to accept a promotion to Lieutenant junior-grade aboard Captain Riker's U.S.S. Titan.

In addition, Sam Rutherford has amnesia and will have to relearn how to be the Cerritos' best engineer with the help of D'Vana Tendi. Of course, the Cerritos will continue its' primary mission of Second Contact while Star Trek: Lower Decks lovingly homages any and all aspects of the Star Trek franchise.

Star Trek: Lower DecksSeason 1 is available to stream on CBS All-Access.
