Alex Kurtzman hopes the Star Trek film and television properties unify

Alex Kurtzman hopes the televised and theatrical versions of Star Trek unify their storytelling and incorporate one another going forward. 

While fans may be slit on Alex Kurtzman’s Star Trek, he at least understands the ideas that make Star Trek great, even if his execution is oftentimes lacking. Talking to SFX Magazine Kurtzman talked about what he hopes happens between the Star Trek film and television series.

The idea of the Trek bringing films and series together in one shared narrative isn’t entirely new. The Original Series directly fed into the Trek films of the ’70s and ’80s, and while some continuity got lost (Like in Wrath of Khan, Kirk being explained the events of Space Seed by people who weren’t there), it was largely faithful in its storytelling.

In the ’90s that got cranked up even more, and even involved ideas from the television series that happened after The Next Generation went off the air. Like Worf captaining the Defiant, a ship created in Deep Space Nine, or how the films wanted to bring in Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Nemesis.

If the formula is followed like before, then that would mean that Star Trek: Discovery would begin getting movie treatments that somehow call back to, or allude to events that happen in Picard or Strange New Worlds. That may not be the best way to reboot the film franchise but at least it’s an idea.
