Star Trek: Discovery’s Latest Recruit Could Be Key To Bringing Back Starfleet
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, Episode 3, "People of Earth," now streaming on CBS All Access.
In the third season of Star Trek: Discovery, Captain Saru and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery find themselves in the 32nd century following an event called The Burn, which resulted in all dilithium-powered ships to explode simultaneously. As a result of this catastrophe, Starfleet essentially fell, though there are still remnants of the group throughout the cosmos. The Discovery has thus made it its mission to find them -- and hopefully help bring back the organization and its ideals.

After arriving in Earth's orbit, the Discovery is boarded by the United Earth Defense Force, a unit that took control of the planet's protection following the fall of Starfleet. Its agents are eager to learn more about the Discovery, how it survived this long after The Burn and how its ancient technology is still pristine. As the UEDF conducts its investigation, Discovery introduces Adira, a 16-year-old UEDF officer.
Adira quickly demonstrates how brilliant they are, going so far as to sabotage the ship to make sure the UEDF is unable to leave. Eventually, Adira is confronted by Stamets, and they reveal that they actually want to join the Discovery. Stamets is taken by surprise, but he also doesn't object, given that Adira is incredibly smart and they have a friendly rapport.
But Adira doesn't simply wish to leave the UEDF and Earth behind for fun. Instead, they're actually bonded with a Trill symbiont, a symbiotic alien creature who lives inside hosts. This particular symbiont was once bonded to Admiral Senna Tal, a Starfleet officer who sent out a call telling anyone who still believed in the Federation to come to Earth. This is the very call that brought the Discovery to Earth in the first place. Unfortunately, Tal can't help the Discovery in the normal way, since the UEDF reveals the Admiral is dead.
However, the Trill symbiont carries with it part of the identity and memories of its previous host. This means Adira is now,in a manner of speaking, Tal. They know what he knew. And since Tal seemed to be the one who knew how to bring Starfleet back, it appears this key is now inside Adira.
Therefore, the Discovery's young new recruit is incredibly important. The only problem is, Adira is having trouble accessing Tal's memories, which means the crew of the ship will have to help her gain access to them somehow. Still, part of the quest of this season now lies solely in Adira and their symbiont.
