Star Trek: Discovery – Executive Producer And Star Talk Big Screen Ideas For The Future

Why don’t you just do a feature film with this crew?! Star Trek: Discovery is the future of Star Trek.

In 2016, Star Trek Beyond was the last film in the long-running franchise to grace the big screen. While this is certainly disappointing, Trek is flourishing on the small screen with the likes of Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and the vanguard of new Trek, Star Trek: Discovery.  Almost inconceivably, there are at least 3 more shows coming, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Prodigy, and the unnamed Section 31 show.

So You Want A Movie?

Despite lip service to the contrary, with so many shows on the air and in the queue, it’s hard to not feel like Trek has abandoned theaters. Given the raging pandemic, ceding that space might not be the worst thing in the world. On the flip side of that, as you watch the last two seasons of Discovery, there’s a nagging feeling of, what could they do with a bigger scope and budget?

During a roundtable with Trek star Sonequa Martin-Green and Executive Producer/Director Tunde Osunsanmi, they took a moment to address the question from a colleague about whether or not this crew would venture onto the big screen:

Sonequa Martin-Green explained what she’d want at the heart of any big-screen adventure:

The show is a hit for CBS All Access, having already been renewed for a fourth season, just one day after the premiere of the third. That said, the economics of films are vastly different and a bit riskier. It’ll be interesting to see what CBS/Paramount’s future plans are for the series. It’s been some decades since a crew has jumped from the living room to the theater. Let Star Trek: Discovery take the series into the future, and not just in-story wise.

To Boldly Make Final Statements

For my part, I’d love to see it. I enjoyed the first two seasons, but in Season 3, the show really seems to have found its stride.  I could only imagine what they’d do with a bigger budget. A highlight of the show and, particularly this season, has been the gorgeous location shoots. This really adds to the cinematic feel of the show and I’m hoping they can maintain the quality going forward, as it seems Season 4 will be borrowing tech from a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: The Mandalorian LED walls.

But what do you think? Have you been enjoying Star Trek: Discovery and would you want to see this crew on the big screen? Let us know in the comments below or on Discord.
